Hooley (Hoelly, Holly) is a Swiss family name occurring among the Mennonites of America. Among the immigrants bearing this name were two brothers, Michael and Andreas Hooley, the latter having with him a son John, who arrived in Pennsylvania (Philadelphia) 3 November 1750. Andreas was an Amish Mennonite, and located in what is now Lebanon County, Pennsylvania. His son John (1739-1805) married Catherine Blank, and lived for a time in Berks County, Pennsylvania, later in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania. He was an Amish Mennonite preacher. Some of his descendants later (1844) settled at West Liberty, Ohio. The Hooley family is now found in many states, chiefly Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, and Oregon. Among the ordained members of the family may be mentioned Joseph Y. Hooley, a deacon ordained in the Forks, Indiana, congregation (Mennonite Church [MC]) in 1906, and Orvin H. Hooley, minister ordained in the Locust Grove, Michigan, congregation (MC) in 1945. A German immigrant named Holly, who came from Hesse, served as one of the early ministers in the Tiskilwa, Illinois, congregation (MC), possibly in the 1840s.
