Pol family
Pol, a Dutch Mennonite family, which is said to have come from Münsterland, Westphalia, Germany. (1) Jan Jansz Pol, born about 1665, a weaver, spent his winters in Zaandam, Holland, and is supposed to have joined the Mennonites there. About 1700 he settled at Borne in the district of Twenthe, Dutch province of Overijssel, from where this family later spread over the Netherlands. By marriage they have become related to many prominent Mennonite families of Twenthe, such as Hulshoff, ten Cate, Doorencate, Nijenhuis, Paschen, Stroink, Stenvers. In Borne the Pol family, which in the first generations was engaged in weaving and textile business, were Groningen Old Flemish Mennonites. (2) Jan Jansz Pol (1740-1806), a textile merchant and grandson of (1) Jan Jansz Pol, was in 1766-1806 a lay preacher of the Borne congregation. From 1779 he was a "commissaris" (trustee, and at the same time elder) of the Groningen Old Flemish Mennonite conference. (3) Adam Pol (b. 1782 at Borne, d. 1872 at Workum), son of (2) Jan Jansz Pol, after receiving his training from Pastor Pieter Beets of Zaandam, served as Mennonite preacher at Hippolytushoef (Wieringen) 1810-1819 and at Hindeloopen 1819-1850. The following ministers from this family received their training at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary: (4) Jacob Pol (b. 1787 at Hengelo, d. 1848 at Weesperkarspel), a son of Jan Hendriksz Pol of Hengelo, served at Hoorn 1814-1843. His brother (5) Jan Pol (b. 1804 at Hengelo, d. there 1849) was the pastor at Leeuwarden in 1827-1849; a half brother of (4) Jacob and (5) Jan was (6) Gerhard Pol (b. 1815 at Hengelo, d. 1895 at Apeldoorn), who was a minister at Baard 1840-1853, Ouddorp 1853-1862, and Kromwal (Ytens) 1862-1883. Finally (7) Johannes Pol (b. 1815 at Hippolytushoef, d. 1888 at Norden), a son of (3) Adam Pol, served at Warga 1839-1847 and at Norden, East Friesland, Germany, 1847-1884. His picture was published by Jan ten Doornkaat Koolman in his history of the Norden Church (1904).
Some of them published sermons and other writings: (4) Jacob Pol published a Leerrede (sermon) at Hoorn in 1839, commemorating his 25 years of serving and also his farewell sermon at Hoorn (Hoorn, 1848). (6) Gerhard Pol published his farewell sermon preached at Baard, Afscheidsrede (Harlingen, 1854), and (7) Johannes Pol Iets uit mijn Katechisatiewerk (Norden, 1886). Many members of the Pol family have served as deacons at Borne as did some members of the Hulshoff Pol lateral branch.
