The Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute, a church high school, was established in September 1945 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, in a few rooms in the building of the Mennonite Brethren Bible College. In these years, Mennonite Brethren parents in Winnipeg had a growing concern about the influence of public schools on their children. They wanted a school that would meet the requirements of the Manitoba curriculum, but also pass on their faith and language to the next generation.
Enrolment was 44 students in the first year. It wasn’t long, however, before more space was needed. As numbers rose, the school moved into a duplex at 173 Talbot Ave. This site experienced several renovations and additions, including new classrooms and labs in 1947, and a gymnasium in 1951. Subsequent building projects were carried out in 1959, 1972, 1987, and 2004.
Up to 1956 the school had a total enrolment of 1,042 students, of whom 226 had graduated. In 1955-56, 163 students were enrolled in classes.
At first, only grades 10 and 11 were offered. Grade 12 was added in 1946, grade 9 in 1947, grades 7 and 8 in 1955, and grade 6 in 2004.
The following have served as principal: Henry Wall (1945–1947), Gerhard Lohrenz (1947–1952), William Neufeld (1952–1953), David K. Duerksen (1953–1954), Victor Adrian (1954–1957), Henry J.
