Siemens is a Mennonite family name which originating among the Mennonites of Prussia and Danzig, and was later transplanted to Russia and then North America. One of the earliest records of the name is found in the church record of Danzig (1665). The name was common in Elbing, Königsberg, Tiegenhagen, Rosenort, Fürstenwerder and Tragheimerweide. The name was presumably derived from the first name Simon, a common German name.

Among the Russian Mennonites, B. H. Unruh in his Hintergründe book lists Franz Siemens, George Siemens, Peter Siemens as ministers. A. A. Töws in his Mennonitische Märtyrer lists D. J. Siemens as well. Jan Siemen was one of the first Germantown settlers. J. Siemens had a large flour mill at Nikopol, Ukraine, and another J. Siemens was Oberschulze at Fernheim, Chaco in Paraguay. Near the middle of the 20th century several members of the Siemens family had prominent positions in the Mennonite church and community, including the General Conference Mennonite Church ministers: J. J. Siemens, in Winkler, Manitoba, Gerhard Siemens, F. F. Siemens and Rubin L. Siemens in Ransom, Kansas. Nikolai Siemens was a leader among the Mennonites of Paraguay, and served for a long time as editor of the Menno-Blatt. Jacob J. Siemens was a business leader in Altona, Manitoba.
