Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is the county seat (1957 pop. 4,610, 2000 pop. 8,751) of Henry County, in the southeastern part of the state of Iowa. In 1874-1876 Prussian Mennonite immigrants, who later settled in Kansas and Nebraska, lived in this city temporarily through the influence of Cornelius Jansen, who resided in Mount Pleasant in 1874-1876. During World War II, from February 1943 to September 1946, Civilian Public Service Unit No. 86, under Mennonite Central Committee administration, was located at the Mount Pleasant State Hospital. Conscientious objectors were again employed at the hospital in a Mennonite I-W unit under the new Selective Service program following World War II.
