Remecó-Guatrache Colony was the first Mennonite agricultural colony in Argentina, established in March 1986 by Old Colony Mennonites from Mexico and Bolivia. It is located in La Pampa Province on a ranch of ca. 10,000 hectares (25,000 acres), ca. 700 km (435 miles) west of Buenos Aires, halfway between Santa Rosa and Bahia Blanca. By April 1987 100 families (600 persons) had already located on this land. An additional 50 families (300 persons) were still expected.
Villages were established, but as of September 1986, had not been named, except Reinfeld, which was the first village established. The land was well-suited for mixed agriculture. Crops being produced and planned were wheat and other grains, vegetables, citrus fruits, apples, peaches and apricots. Chicken and animal husbandry was also being initiated. New arrivals lived in the ranch's main buildings until single dwelling units could be built. When asked about the settlement, a businessman with whom they had dealt in Guatrache commented that on meeting them he knew immediately that these were honest people whom he could trust fully, but they also reminded him of how things must have been in the 19th century.
