Regier, Peter (1776-1814)
Peter Regier: minister and elder; born 10 March 1776 in Altmünsterberg, Prussia, a son of Elder Cornelius Regier (1743-1794) and Margaretha von Bergen (1736-1794). Peter married Agatha Wiebe (18 February 1762, Ellerwald, Prussia - 23 July 1827, Siebenhuben, Prussia) on 11 October 1798 in Sparrau, Prussia. She was a daughter of Elder Gerhard Wiebe (1725-1796) and Maria (Wiebe) Wiebe (1730-1794). Agatha was the widow of Peter Behrends and had two children from her first marriage. Peter and Agatha had three children: Margaretha, Maria and Peter (b. 1806). Peter died 26 April 1814 in Siebenhuben, Prussia and was buried at Orloff, near his home.
After Peter and Agatha's marriage, Peter settled in Sparrau in the area of the Elbing-Ellerwald congregation. In 1798 his congregation chose him as minister, but he declined the office because he was planning to move to the Grosswerder. In 1799 he moved to Siebenhuben and was chosen as minister by the Ladekopp congregation. In 1809 he was consecrated as elder of the Grosswerder Mennonite Church by his brother Abraham Regier in the Orlofferfelde church.
In 1809 he agreed to the appointment of an elder for Fürstenwerder. In 1811 he and Johann Donner of Orlofferfelde, and Cornelius Wiens, the treasurer, journeyed to Marienwerder to present a gift of 10,000 talers to Friedrich Wilhelm III for the state. At a conference meeting in Marienburg in 1813 Donner and Regier were delegated to go to Königsberg to request exemption from military service for the Mennonites. An account of his mission is found in Donner's autobiography. Apparently there was a lack of understanding and appreciation for their work and he and Donner were violently opposed by their members.
Peter Regier served as elder only six years. He was the last elder serving the entire Grosswerder group of congregations - Rosenort, Ladekopp, Fürstenwerder, and Tiegenhagen.
