Persijn, an old Dutch family that can be traced back to 1080. Hippolytus Persijn became known as an enemy of the Mennonites. On 7 February 1544, he wrote a report to the Privy Council against the followers of Menno Simons (preserved in the state archives at Brussels). In a trial presided over by Hippolytus Persijn in 1554 Frans de Cuiper recanted his Mennonite convictions. On 10 January 1553, Hippolytus Persijn issued a proclamation against the Mennonites, which gives expression to his fear that the followers of Menno were more numerous than commonly supposed. In 1565 he again urged the severe persecution of the Mennonites. He died on 3 December 1568, at Utrecht.

Hippolytus Persijn was a zealous Roman Catholic, as were other members of this family during the 16th century. Duke Alba, during his stay in Amsterdam, was the guest of the patrician merchant Jan Persijn; but his brother Pieter Persijn, who favored the Mennonites and was probably a member of the church, was seized on 27 November 1567, on the order of the infamous Blood Council with 37 brethren and put to death without trial in Amsterdam in April 1568, and his property confiscated. It is not known when the family joined the Mennonites. The marriage of Jan Poppesz Persijn with Tettje Bouwens, a granddaughter of the indefatigable Elder Leenaert Bouwens, on 11 December 1728, shows a close connection. Poppe Jansz Persijn, the son of Jan Poppesz and Teltje Bouwens, owned a roofing-tile factory at Harlingen, Friesland. Their son Jan Persijn was a Mennonite pastor. Others were deacons, as for example his son Jan Hendrik Persijn (1824-1910), an architect, who was a cofounder of the Arnhem congregation and its deacon-treasurer for more than 25 years. Through other marriages the Persijns are related to many well-known Mennonite families.
