The Garifuna are descendants of African slaves who escaped from slavery, intermarried with Carib Indians, and developed a unique language and culture. They developed on the coasts of Honduras, Belize, and Guatemala. In the 1970s and 1980s, they began migrating to the United States, including Los Angeles, New York City, and Chicago.

The Ministerio Evangélico Eden Tampa in Florida began as a church plant in 2019 under the sponsorship of the New York City Garifuna community. Pastor Selvin Pepersburg led the effort in the Tampa area. The congregation is affiliated with the Garifuna District of LMC: a Fellowship of Anabaptist Churches.
