During the 1950s, sentiment within the Chappell Mennonite Church in Chappell, Nebraska, USA, desired a change in conference affiliation since it was geographically separated from the main body of the Iowa-Nebraska Conference of the Mennonite Church (MC) to which it belonged. The members felt they could have closer fellowship with the South Central Conference. In October 1957, the congregation was received as a member of the South Central Conference.

A group of Chappell members residing in the Julesburg, Colorado area, had begun holding services in the Julesburg Cottage in 1956. The group decided to have its own worship space and wanted to retain its membership in the Iowa-Nebraska Conference. As a result, the group purchased a lot and organized a Sunday school and the Julesburg Mennonite Church in Julesburg on 8 September 1957. John Roth, one of Chappell's ministers, also served Julesburg in its first years.

In 1958 the congregation built a meetinghouse in Julesburg. In 1966 it built an addition on the south end of the existing building. In 1988 it added a sanctuary to the north of the existing building. The first service in the new sanctuary took place on Christmas morning in 1988.

As part of the realignment of the Mennonite Church (MC) and General Conference Mennonite Church into Mennonite Church USA, Julesburg Mennonite was among the congregations that joined the new Central Plains Mennonite Conference in 2000.

In April 2021, the Julesburg Mennonite Church withdrew from the Central Plains Conference of Mennonite Church USA. In June 2021, it changed its name to The Well of Hope and became an independent congregation.
