Heyndrik van Dale (d. 1562)

Heyndrik (Heyndrick) van Dale, an Anabaptist martyr, was drowned at Antwerp, Belgium, on 3 April 1562 because he "persisted in his heresy of rebaptism." He was unmarried. He had been baptized by Joachim de Suyckerbacker. Van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror, who calls him simply Hendrik, gives 15 August 1561 as the date of the death of a group of seven martyrs which included Hendrik. This is an error. The song mentioned by van Braght in which Hendrik and other martyrs are celebrated and beginning, "Lieve broeders, wij groeten u met sanghen" (Dear Brethren, we greet you with hymns), is found in the Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562 and is included by Wackernagel in Lieder der . . . Reformierten.
