Good, Allan (1882-1942)
Allan Good: minister in the West Zion Mennonite Church near Carstairs. Alberta, and city mission worker in Kansas City, Missouri, and Portland, Oregon, was born 7 August 1882 near Waterloo, Ontario, and died at Carstairs, Alberta, on 17 October 1942. He married Maggie Snyder (24 July 1881-15 October 1919) in March 1909. He then married Fannie Miller (25 January 1885-19 December 1964). They had one son and one daughter.
Allan Good migrated from Ontario to Carstairs, Alberta in 1902. There he opened a successful lumber business and became a member of the West Zion Mennonite Church. He served for a number of years as Sunday School Superintendent, in which capacity he initiated a Quarter Investment Fund. It was a scheme whereby he gave each child a quarter ($.25) to invest in things such as seeds for a small garden or feed for a small farm animal. Proceeds from the sale of the resulting produce were sent or invested in missionary endeavours.
In 1911 Allan and Maggie Good left the lumber business and moved to Hesston, Kansas, to take a short Bible course at the Hesston Academy as preparation for mission work. The Goods then accepted a short-term assignment to help repair the facilities of the Argentine Mission in Kansas City which was operated by the Mennonite Church. But, instead of going back to Hesston after the summer as originally planned, they remained with the Kansas City mission until 1918. Allan Good was ordained to the ministry in 1917 in Kansas City. He continued in the work in Kansas City until 1919 when Maggie's deteriorating health prompted a return to Carstairs. During the time of Maggie's illness and after her death, Allan Good served the West Zion congregation as a Minister and also conducted Bible Conference work among the churches in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
After Maggie Good's death, Allan married Fannie Miller in May of 1922. Shortly thereafter the Goods accepted a call to start a city mission work in Portland, Oregon, continuing in that work until 1933 when, due to Allan's ill health, they moved to a small farm near Hubbard, Oregon. They returned to Alberta in the fall of 1939. There Allan again served as a minister, assisting in the Mount Calvary congregation at Westward Ho, Alberta. He suffered a stroke in 1940 and died of congestive heart failure in 1942.
