Buckwalter is a Swiss Mennonite family name which has been represented in North America chiefly in the Franconia and Lancaster Conferences (Mennonite Church). Johannes Buckwalter of Berks County, Pennsylvania was naturalized in 1730. Tax records of 1734 in the same county include a Jacob Buckwalter. In 1751 one of the trustees of the Coventry Mennonite Church in Chester County, Pennsylvania was Johannes Buckwalter; he may or may not have been identical with the Berks County settler of 1730. John Buckwalter (1749-1835) was a Mennonite minister in the Phoenixville and Charlestown Mennonite congregations of Chester County, Pennsylvania. David Buckwalter (1809-91) was minister at nearby Coventry and Vincent from 1854-1891.

Louis and Joseph Boughwalder settled in Lancaster County in 1723 and 1747 respectively. The following Buckwalters served as ministers: Henry Buckwalter (ca. 1740-1805) who was a minister in the Mellinger congregation, as was David Buckwalter (ca. 1821-1906); Michael Buckwalter (ca. 1809-1876), a deacon in the same congregation, one of the largest in the conference; Ira J. Buckwalter (1870-1950), a minister in the Martins and Pleasant View Mennonite congregations in eastern Ohio from 1893, and bishop from 1895, and who at the time of his death in 1950 had been a bishop longer than any living leader in the Mennonite Church (MC). Other well-known Buckwalters include Bishop Earl Buckwalter of Hesston, Kansas, and his two missionary sons, Albert in Argentina and Ralph in Japan. Ira J. Buckwalter served as treasurer of the Eastern Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities.
