Arnold, Eberhard C. H. ("Hardy ") Arnold, b. 18 August 1912 in Halle a. d. the Saale, Germany. Hardy Arnold was the eldest son of Eberhard Arnold and Emmy (von Hollander) Arnold. He died at the New Meadow Run Bruderhof on 2 November 1987. He was raised in Berlin, Sannerz, and the Rhönbruderhof, and studied at universities in Tubingen, Zürich, and Birmingham, England. He lived at Primavera, Paraguay, then immigrated to the United States in 1958. He was married to Edith Boecker; they had four children. After Edith's death he married Martha (Sekunda) Kleiner. He was confirmed in the Service of the Word (Diener am Wort), by the visiting Schmiedeleut Hutterite Servant of the Word, David Hofer of James Valley (Manitoba) Bruderhof, on 13 September 1937, at the Cotswold Bruderhof in England. He was editor at the Plough Publishing House, where his responsibilities included the periodicals Der Pflug (1938-39), and The Plough (1938-40). He served the Society of Brothers as a prolific translator and editor until his death. The most important published works that he edited and translated were: Rechenschaft unserer Religion, Lehr und Glaubens ... durch Peter Riedemann (Ashton Keynes, England, 1938), which he also translated as Confession of Faith: Account of Our Religion, Doctrine and Faith, Given by Peter Riedemann ... (Hodder and Stoughton, Great Britain, 1950); The Early Christians After the Death of the Apostles (Rifton, NY, 1970), a translation of Eberhard Arnold 's Die ersten Christen nach dem Tode der Apostel (Sannerz and Berlin, 1926); Am Anfang war die Liebe: Dokumente, Briefe und Texte der Urchristen (Wiesbaden, 1986), a new edition of Die ersten Christen. He was co-editor of Eberhard and Emmy Arnold, Seeking for the Kingdom of God: Origins of the Bruderhof Communities (Rifton, NY, 1974); wrote "Eberhard Arnold, 1883-193(5): A Short Biography," Mennonite Quarterly Review 25 (1951): 219-221; edited Eberhard Arnold, "On the History of the Baptizer Movement in Reformation Times," Mennonite Quarterly Review 43 (1969): 213-33; and coauthored For the Sake of Divine Truth (Rifton, NY, 1974).
