Sommerfeld Colony (Bolivia)

Sommerfeld Colony, Bolivia is located 55 km (35 miles) southeast of Santa Cruz, east of the Swift Current colony. Sommerfeld was established in 1968 by a group of about 50 Mennonite families from the Santa Clara colony in Mexico. This is the only group that has moved from Mexico to Bolivia that does not belong to the Old Colony Mennonites. It is a Sommerfeld Mennonite church with bishop Peter Wiebe as their leader. In 1987 one church building and two schools were located in the colony. The colony consisted of four villages. Due to financial hardships and squatters it lost some of its land; some land had also been sold to the neighboring Swift Current colony. In 1986 the population of Sommerfeld colony consisted of 419 people with 132 baptized church members. -- IHie
