Martin van der Straten (1534-1572)
Martin (Maerten) van der Straten (Straeten), was an Anabaptist martyr, born about 1534 at Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders, was burned at the stake at Ghent, Belgium, on 4 December 1572. His wife, Beliken de Jaghere also died as a martyr at Ghent on 17 March 1573. Martin had received baptism on his faith at Middelburg, in the Dutch province of Zeeland. By trade he wasa maker of felt hats. Van Braght's Martyrs Mirror contains six of his letters. Three of them Martin wrote to his wife, who was his fellow prisoner, comforting her and admonishing her with the words of Scripture and the Apocrypha to have patience and endurance in her suffering. The fourth letter was written to Anna Servaes, the fifth to Servaes Jansz. In the sixth he wrote words of admonition and comfort to Adam v. L. and his wife. These letters all contain exhortations and admonitions to keep the faith; personal information in them is scarce. Incidentally the information is given that Martin and Beliken had married three years before; the marriage had been performed in the congregation. In the letters Martin also sent greetings in the name of Adriaen, Hansken, Margriet, Lou, and Dingentgen, all imprisoned with them. The identity of Adriaen, Hansken, Margriet, and Dingentgen is easily established; they were Adriaen Rogiers, Hansken van Oudenaerde, Grietgen van Sluys, and Dingentgen van Hondschoote. Lou could not be identified.
