Vogt, Milton Christian (1901-1968)
Milton Christian Vogt was born 14 August 1901 near Moundridge, KS. He was the oldest of eight children born to Christian A. and Barbra Ruth Vogt. He completed high school at Hesston Academy in 1922 and then taught school for one year. Following the year of teaching he enrolled at Hesston College. He transferred to Goshen College for his senior year (BA, 1927). After his graduation he was appointed, along with his fianceé, Esther Kulp, to serve as a missionary in India, and was ordained to the ministry at Hesston Mennonite Church on 26 June 1927.
Milton and Esther Vogt served as missionaries, 1927-1968. The first 14 years were spent in the mission at Dhamtari. In 1941 they were transferred to Bihar to work in the evangelistic program that was starting there. Milton’s last 18 years in Palamau District were most fruitful and satisfying. The main concern and passion of his life was building the church. No effort was too much to visit small groups of Christians for prayer meetings and Sunday services. Milton’s abilities and responsibilities were many. He was effective as an evangelist and pastor and on committees. He was secretary and treasurer of the Bihar Mennonite Mission for 18 years and also for a number of years went about 60 miles three days each week to oversee the work at Satbarwa Hospital. He served with famine relief in West Bengal, 1943-1944. His qualities of openness, simplicity, diligence, fearlessness, and cheerfulness, and his deep devotion and sense of purpose combined to make him a person loved and respected by all who knew him.
Milton Vogt apparently suffered a stroke while riding his motorcycle on his way to work. This led to his death on 5 January 1968 at Satbarwa Hospital. He was buried near his home at Bathet, Palamau District, Bihar.
