Bogatzky, Carl Heinrich von (1690-1774)
Carl Heinrich von Bogatzky (7 September 1690-15 June 1774) was one of the most popular and influential devotional writers of the Lutheran Church in Germany, a leader in the Pietist movement. After a study of law at the University of Jena (1713-1715) he transferred to the University of Halle where he studied theology (1715-1718) and came fully under the influence of A. H. Francke, the great Pietist leader. Unable to undertake a pastorate because of poor health, he spent his long life in a private pastoral ministry to many noble families, and also in institutions, first largely in his native Silesia, then after 1746 in Halle, where he ministered widely to students and young people.
Bogatzky's chief contribution was made, however, through his devotional writings, which, though not intellectually on a high plane, nevertheless had great influence because of their warm piety, deep sincerity, and simplicity of expression; they are among the best and most influential products of "Halle Pietism." Güldenes Schatzkästlein der Kinder Gottes, Bogatzky's first book (1718), became tremendously popular and enjoyed countless editions. Tägliches Hausbuch der Kinder Gottes was another widely read volume. The Schatzkästlein appeared in a Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) edition of 1811, a copy of which was possessed by the grandmother of John F. Funk in Eastern Pennsylvania. In far-off Waterloo County, Ontario, in the early years of the pioneer Mennonite settlement there, Heinrich Eby published in 1845 a 31-page extract from Bogatzky's Das Leben Christi im Himmel, under the title, Eine Betrachtung über die Sünde wider den Heiligen Geist. His writings were found in Mennonite homes.
