Samuel Grant "S. G." Shetler (1871-1942), a prominent Mennonite (Mennonite Church) evangelist and Bible teacher, was born 13 January 1871. He was baptized 13 December 1892 at the Stahl Mennonite Church, where he was ordained deacon in 1894 and minister in 1897. He was ordained bishop in 1915 at the Hopewell Mennonite Church near Hubbard, Oregon, where he was temporarily residing and serving as pastor. He was an energetic promoter of summer Bible schools and in 1920 established the Johnstown Winter Bible School at the Stahl church in addition to promoting and teaching in various winter Bible schools in other parts of the church. He was widely used as an evangelist for many years, holding revival meetings in almost every section of the Mennonite Church. In 1919 he served as moderator of the Mennonite General Conference; he also served in various offices in the Southwestern Pennsylvania Mennonite Conference.
