Jan van der Mersch, an Anabaptist martyr, a native of Kortrijk (Courtrai), was burned at the stake on 7 June 1569 at Kortrijk (Courtrai), Belgium. He had been present at two meetings held in early 1569 in the vicinity of Kortrijk and had been a member of the congregation since 1566. His imprisonment lasted for 152 days. Jan van der Mersch, whose property was confiscated, apparently belonged to the van der Meersch (van Meersch, van der Mersch) family, some Mennonite members of which emigrated to the Netherlands in the following decades.
