Drowning of Leonard Pluvier, Jannetje, and Marietje van Aken, Antwerp, 1560. Engraving by Jan Luiken in Martyrs Mirror, v. 2, p. 271 of Dutch edition. Scan provided by Mennonite Library and Archives

Janneken van Aken (Jenneken Eghels), an Anabaptist martyr, drowned in a wine-cask, 3 April 1560 inside the Steen castle (prison) at Antwerp, Belgium, together with Lenaert Plovier and Mayken de Hont. Particulars about this martyr are lacking. We only know that she was born at Haerlebeke near Kortrijk in Flanders. Her name is celebrated in the hymn "Aenhoort Godt, hemelsche Vader" in the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren; she may be the author of the song "Verhuecht verblijt groot ende cleijn" of this Lietboecxken.
