Geeraerdt (Geeraardt, Gerardt) Brandt, born 25 July 1626 at Amsterdam, died 12 July 1685 at Rotterdam, was first a clockmaker, then studied theology and was a Remonstrant preacher in the Netherlands (Nieuwkoop 1652-1660; Hoorn 1660-1667; Amsterdam 1667-1687); he wrote the anonymously published Kort verhaal der Reformatie (1657) and the later Historie der Reformatie en andere kerkelijke geschiedenissen in en omtrent de Nederlanden (Vol. I, Amsterdam, 1671, 2nd ed., 1677; Vol. II, Amsterdam, 1674). On the part of the Reformed Church in the Netherlands there was so much opposition to this work that Brandt did not continue it. His son Johannes published the third and fourth parts in 1704. It is written with excellent impartiality. This fact and the manner in which he relates all sorts of particulars give his work value even for the present as a source of our history. Mennonite history written before Schijn-Maatschoen, Geschiedenis der Mennoniten (1743-1745), was largely based on Brandt.
A French translation of the first three parts was published in The Hague in 1704; an English translation in four parts was produced in London in 1720-1723.
