He had been present at two meetings held in early 1569 in the vicinity of Kortrijk and had been a member of the congregation since 1566. His imprisonment lasted for 152 days. Jan van der Mersch, whose property was confiscated, apparently belonged to the van der Meersch (van Meersch, van der Mersch) family, some Mennonite members of which immigrated to the Netherlands in the following decades.
