Anthonis Schoonvelt, also named Thonis (Thuenis) van Waestene, an Anabaptist martyr, was strangled and burned on the marketplace at Ieper, Belgium, in 1561. Along with several others he was captured in Ten Hoogensieken, near Ieper, and also remained true to his faith in spite of severe torture. Anthonis and the others spoke very freely and disrespectfully concerning the Roman Catholic Church and the "Sacrament of the Altar," calling the latter an idol. Anthonis occurs in the song, "Geroert ben ick van binnen" (I am moved within), which is to be found in the Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562 and in the Liedtboecxken van den Offer des Heeren of 1563, No. 23. It is reprinted by Wackernagel.
