Gerrit (Gheert) Vermandele (van Mandel), an [[Anabaptism|Anabaptist]] martyr, was burned at the stake in [[Antwerp (Belgium)|Antwerp]] on 30 March 1569, together with Willem de Clercq and Pieter Verlonge. He was a weaver, originally from [[Kortrijk (West-Vlaanderen, Belgium)|Kortrijk]], Flanders, 26 years of age; he lived for a number of years at Borgerhout near Antwerp; he had been (re)baptized four years before by [[Hendrik van Arnhem (16th century)|Hendrik van Arnhem]] in a wood near Antwerp. He and his companions were arrested while holding a meeting in the house of [[Jan Poote (d. 1569)|Jan Poote]] at Borgerhout. Gerrit refused to give details about the congregation.
