Jan Poote (d. 1569)
Jan Poote (Poeten; Jan van Doornik in van Braght, Martyrs' Mirror) was an Anabaptist martyr burned at the stake on 19 March 1569 at Antwerp, Belgium. He was born near Hasselt in the territory of Liège, Belgium, and was a tailor by trade. During his trial he confessed that he was about 50 years of age, that he had not attended the Catholic Church for 13 or 14 years. He had been baptized in the woods between Kortrijk and Doornik in Flanders, but did not name the elder who had baptized him. He had married his wife in a meeting of the congregation. Living at Dambrugge near Antwerp, he held Mennonite meetings in his house. He was apprehended with a number of members when such a meeting, attended by about 30 persons, was surprised. Even in torture Jan refused to inform his judges who were the preachers and members of the congregation, and what elders had come from abroad to perform baptism and marriages. He died as a true Christian. His confiscated property realized a considerable amount of money.
