Conservative in theology, and a devoted Mennonite, he was not denominationally narrow nor bound by tradition. He founded (January 1922) and led as chairman until his death the South German Mennonite relief organization known as [[Mennonitisches Hilfswerk Christenpflicht|Christenpflicht]].
