Joost Casier (or Cesaer) was a deacon of the Waterlander Mennonite congregation at Leiden, Holland, at least until 1656. In a letter of 1614 he signed his name with the French addition, diaque des Valon a Leiden. The letter, also signed in French by Jean de Mortier as Evesque (bishop) and Jean des Mullier as Serviteur (preacher), seems to indicate the existence of a separate congregation called Vallons, that is, French-speaking Mennonites, originally from the Walloon district of Belgium.
