Mortier, Jean de (17th century)
Jean (Jan) de Mortier was an elder of the Waterlander congregation at Leiden, Holland. He was one of the group of Waterlander, High German, and Frisian leaders who on 16 March 1614 sent a letter to the Mennonites of Bergischland and South Germany to promote peace with them. De Mortier signs this letter "Jan de Mortier, bishop of the church of Walloons at Leyden"; hence it is known that the Waterlander congregation in which he served was composed of French-speaking Walloons, apparently immigrants from southern Belgium.
