Fresno, a city located in the [[San Joaquin Valley (California, USA)|San Joaquin Valley]], Fresno County, central [[California (USA)|California]], had a population of 100,000 in the 1950s, and by the year 2000, a population of 427,652. Fresno is in the center of the raisin industry area and is surrounded by rich farm lands producing not only a variety of fruits but also cotton, grain, and dairy products. Fresno County is still considered the number one agricultural county in the United States. In 1940 the Mennonite Brethren organized a church in Fresno, in 1944 the Pacific Bible Institute, and in 1955 the M.B. Biblical Seminary. The Mennonite Community Church (Mennonite Church USA) was organized in Fresno in 1953.
