Laurens van Gelder (Lauwereyns Cruwele or Cruele), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake (Martyrs' Mirror says beheaded) on 22 May 1557, at Antwerp, Belgium, with Jeronymus, Pieter de Meulenaer, Jacob van Yper, and Martin de Wael. Their names are found in the song, "Aenhoort Godt, hemelsche Vader" (Hear, O God, heavenly Father), No. 16 of the Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren. Laurens was a native of Kortrijk (Courtrai) in Flanders. His trade is not mentioned.
