Hilversum is a town (1953 population 91,967, with 1,093 Mennonites; 2007 population 83,640) in the Dutch province of [[North Holland (Netherlands)|North Holland]], the seat of a Mennonite congregation, formerly at [[Huizen (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Huizen]] (see this article, where its history is found until 1878). In 1878 a new meetinghouse was built in Hilversum (dedicated 30 June by Pastor A. Loosjes of [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]]) and the congregation was named Huizen-Hilversum, since 1945 being called Hilversum. The congregation rapidly increased: membership 40 in 1878; 225 in 1897; 500 in 1926; 600 in 1940; 780 in 1955. The meetinghouse was completely rebuilt and greatly enlarged in 1940. In 1908 the members of Hilversum living at Baarn and [[Bussum (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Bussum]] founded Mennonite circles, which have since grown into independent congregations.
