Fresno, a city located in the San Joaquin Valley, Fresno County, central California, had a population of 100,000 in the 1950s, and by the year 2000, a population of 427,652. Fresno is in the center of the raisin industry area and is surrounded by rich farm lands producing not only a variety of fruits but also cotton, grain, and dairy products. Fresno County is still considered the number one agricultural county in the United States. Almost 5,000 Mennonites lived in the area extending from Fresno south through Reedley and Dinuba in the decade of the 1950s. In 1940 the Mennonite Brethren organized a church in Fresno, in 1944 the Pacific Bible Institute, and in 1955 the M.B. Biblical Seminary. The Mennonite Community Church (Mennonite Church USA) was organized in Fresno in 1953.
