Jean (Jan) de Mortier was an elder of the [[Waterlanders|Waterlander]] congregation at [[Leiden (Zuid-Holland, Netherlands)|Leiden]], Holland. He was one of the group of Waterlander, High German, and [[Frisian Mennonites|Frisian]] leaders who on 16 March 1614 sent a letter to the Mennonites of Bergischland and South Germany to promote peace with them. De Mortier signs this letter "Jan de Mortier, bishop of the church of Walloons at Leyden"; hence it is known that the Waterlander congregation in which he served was composed of French-speaking Walloons, apparently immigrants from southern [[Belgium|Belgium]].
