Andries van Laarbeke, an Anabaptist martyr, was seized on 15 July 1558 at Middelburg in the Dutch province of Zeeland, together with Mayken Daniels and Jan Hendricksz. All three had fled from Flanders. Inquiries were made of the dean of the Catholic Church at Roesselaere (Belgium) concerning them by the magistrates of Middelburg. This explains the long duration of their imprisonment. They were put to death on 21 February 1559. Because they "persisted in various errors and unlawful opinions" and would not relinquish their faith, they were subjected to the severest punishment. All three were tied to a stake in the town square at Middelburg, strangled, and then burned to death; afterwards their charred bodies were displayed outside the Noorddampoort. Because the government anticipated popular disturbances at the time of this execution, additional police precautions were taken.
