Jan Sibes, surnamed Pot(te) backer, was an elder of the Mennonite congregation of Harlingen in Friesland, Netherlands, in the 17th century. Concerning this elder there is not much information. He may have been identical with the Jan Sybesz who was a member of the Glückstadt Mennonite congregation in 1633. Sibes often preached in the congregation of Hamburg-Altona; in 1676 he there ordained Ocke Pieters as a preacher. In the same year during a trip of 42 days with Elder Gerhard (Gerrit) Roosen of Hamburg he visited a number of congregations in West Prussia, preaching and baptizing in Orloff, Nieschevski, Montau, Kassou(?), Lunau, Markushof, and Danzig. Maatschoen mentions a poem by Jan Sibes written in Danzig, which describes their trip and was published by Roosen, but is lost.
