Jan Sibes, surnamed Pot(te) backer, was an elder of the Mennonite congregation of Harlingen in [[Friesland (Netherlands)|Friesland, Netherlands]], in the 17th century. Concerning this elder there is not much information. He may have been identical with the Jan Sybesz who was a member of the Glückstadt Mennonite congregation in 1633. Sibes often preached in the congregation of Hamburg-Altona; in 1676 he there ordained [[Pieters, Ocke (d. 1685)|Ocke Pieters]] as a preacher. In the same year during a trip of 42 days with Elder Gerhard (Gerrit) Roosen of Hamburg he visited a number of congregations in West [[Prussia|Prussia]], preaching and baptizing in Orloff, Nieschevski, [[Montau (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland)|Montau]], Kassou(?), Lunau, [[Markushof (Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, Poland)|Markushof]], and [[Danzig (Poland)|Danzig]]. Maatschoen mentions a poem by Jan Sibes written in Danzig, which describes their trip and was published by Roosen, but is lost.
