Carl Christian Philipp Tauchnitz (1798-1884), a prominent German book dealer, and a warm friend of the German Mennonites. In the winter of 1830 a Baptist preacher in London told him about the German Mennonites, and when he returned to Germany he visited Weierhof, Monsheim, Kindenheim, Spitalhof, and Sembach. In 1831 he became acquainted with several congregations in Baden, where "the Easter days passed very pleasantly and blessedly." On 17 April of that year he preached in Spitalhof on the occasion of the baptism of J. Rothen. He also preached at the Weierhof and in Oberflorsheim. He frequently took part in the conferences of the Mennonites in the Palatinate and Hesse. He promoted the publication of the first Palatine hymnal (1832) by friendly persuasion of the opponents of the book. He corresponded with most of the Palatine preachers and by word and deed aided in the revival of the brotherhood. He also published several Mennonite works, among them three books by Johannes Molenaar (Catechismus 1841 and 1854, Andenken 1844, and Evangelische Stimmen 1844, a collection of sermons), one by Herman Reeder (Predigten 1843), and one by B. K. Roosen (Menno Symons 1848). He was especially interested in the founding of a Mennonite theological school, but in vain. He rendered a lasting service to the Mennonites as well as to other free churches.
