Swan River Valley Church of God in Christ, Mennonite (Swan River, Manitoba, Canada)
The Swan River Valley Church of God in Christ, Mennonite congregation near Swan RiverManitoba, Canada had its beginning in colonization by families from the Rosenort and Greenland congregations, as well as a family from Galva, Kansas. Six families had bought farms by spring 1968. More families arrived the following year, including Deacon Edwin W. Penner who provided early leadership. Minister Ed Barkman and family moved to the area in spring 1974.
Initially, Sunday school was held in homes. An organizational meeting was held 12 May 1968 in the McVey school. The congregation later met in the Kenville Hall and the Kenville United Church prior to building its own church building 13 miles southwest of Swan Lake in 1974/75. The first service in the new building was held 28 March 1975.
The Riverdale School began in the church basement in 1977; Frances Cartwright was the first teacher. A separate school building was erected in 1980/81.
Between 1979 and 1981, five families moved to Paris, Texas to help start a congregation there.
In 2020 the congregation was part of the Church of God in Christ, Mennonite. The ministers were Dennis Barkman, Lyle Penner, and Jerome Koehn.
