Sermon on the Mount Mennonite Church (Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA)
The Sermon on the Mount Mennonite Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, USA began in 1975. In the fall of 1974, four families withdrew from the Good Shepherd Mennonite Church to form a house church with shared leadership. They held a charter service as a congregation in March 1975. The group initially met in a Methodist church.
Sermon on the Mount Mennonite Church has emphasized small groups during its existence. It has also engaged in community peace and justice projects.
The congregation joined the Northern District Conference of the General Conference Mennonite Church in 1977 after its initial application was rejected in 1976. It joined the Iowa-Nebraska Conference of the Mennonite Church (MC) in 1979. As part of the realignment of the Mennonite Church (MC) and General Conference Mennonite Church into Mennonite Church USA, Sermon on the Mount Mennonite was among the congregations that joined the new Central Plains Mennonite Conference in 2000.
For many years the group met in the gym of the Calvin Christian School. In 1994 it purchased a building from the Riverside Presbyterian Church and has met there since.
In 2023 the congregation was part of the Central Plains Conference of Mennonite Church USA. Its website in 2023 said, "We worship on Sundays by reading the Scriptures, following the Christian year, prayer, singing, and communion."
