Schuiling family
Schuiling, a Dutch Mennonite family, whose descendants are still found in the province of Friesland; they have usually been engaged in farming. Roelof Roelofs Schuiling (born June 1783 at Kalkwijk, died 12 July 1871, at Oudebildtzijl) was a son of Roelof Schuiling, a (Reformed) koffskipper and later a farmer at Kalkwijk near Sappemeer in the province of Groningen. Young Roelof Roelofs was baptized in his infancy in the Reformed Church, but joined the Mennonite Church, the church of his mother Elsbet Schuiling, who was a descendant of the Swiss Mennonite Meihuizen family. With independent study and the assistance of a friendly Mennonite pastor (whose name is not given) he became a Mennonite preacher, serving 1812-17 at Oudebildtzijl, 1817-18 at Hindeloopen, and 1818-57 at Oudebildtzijl again, at the same time serving the congregation at Hallum. In 1857 he retired. Though he had little formal education, his good intellect and his untiring devotion made him a man of great influence in Friesland, particularly in the Friesche Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (Mennonite Conference of Friesland), of which he was a trustee for many years. He married Klaaske Thyssen Rienks, of Hallum, of a well-known Frisian Mennonite family.
One of their sons was Klaas Roelofs Schuiling (born 9 May 1831, at Oudebildtzijl, died 11 June 1907, at Veenwouden), who after studying at the Amsterdam Mennonite Seminary served as pastor of the Oldeboorn Oude Huis congregation from 1857. In 1887, when on the instigation of Schuiling a merger was effected between the Oude Huis and the Nieuwe Huis congregations, Schuiling became the pastor of the united congregation, serving until 1889, when he moved to Veenwouden, serving here until 1897, in which year he retired. For many years Klaas R. Schuiling was a trustee of the Algemeene Doopsgezinde Sociëteit (Dutch General Mennonite Conference) and a curator of its seminary. He was also on the executive board of the conference of Friesland and a trustee of the Dutch Mennonite Mission Association. Many of the Schuiling family have served the church as deacons.
