Schrag, Menno (1904-1987)
Menno Schrag: newspaper editor and church worker; born 23 March 1904 to Andrew G. and Freni (Strausz) Schrag in Moundridge, Kansas, USA. Menno married Gertrude Aeberhard (4 February 1909, Pandora, Ohio, USA - 22 September 1996) on 4 May 1933 in Wheaton, Illinois, USA. Menno and Gertrude had three children: Robert, Elizabeth, and James. Menno died 12 June 1987 in Newston, Kansas.
Menno studied at Hesston Academy, Bethel College and Wheaton College (Illinois), graduating from the latter in 1931. He also met Gertrude there.
In 1925 Schrag began newspaper work as typesetter at the Herald Publishing Company, Newton, Kansas, which published Der Herold and, from 1923, the Mennonite Weekly Review. He was named assistant editor of the Review in 1927, and became editor in 1935, a position he held until 1969. He believed that the Review could become an instrument of unity among Mennonites. Under his leadership the paper grew from a 4-page issue with fewer than 1,000 subscribers to a 12-page weekly that reaches readers in most Mennonite groups in North America. He traveled widely (37 countries) and wrote more than 2,500 editorials.
Schrag served the church in many ways in addition to journalism. He was a member of many church boards and committees, including the Bethel College Board of Directors (1951-1963), the Board of Education and Publication of the General Conference Mennonite Church, and the Historical Committee of that conference (chairman).
