Rempel, Gerhard J. (1893-1988)
Gerhard J. "G. J." Rempel, of Blumenort, Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico, an outstanding leader (Vorsteher) of the Cuauhtémoc Old Colony Mennonite settlement, did much for the economic and cultural development of the conservative Mennonites. Among other things he established a small hand press to produce the most needed supplies for the schools and community life. On this press the whole Bible according to the translation of Martin Luther was printed in 1941 and the Russian Mennonite Gesangbuch in 1940 and 1943. The setting of the type and the printing were done primarily by the son of J. A. Enns, Rempel's brother-in-law. The book by Walter Schmiedehaus, Eine feste Burg ist unser Gott, was printed in Rempel's shop in 1948. Many other items were printed at G. J. Rempel Verlag.
