Ramond, Florimond (d. 1601)
Florimond Ramond (Raemund, Raymond, Remon, Raemond) (ca. 1540-1601), a lawyer of Bordeaux, France, concerning whom it was said, "He judged without conscience, wrote books without knowledge, and built without money." His principal work was Histoire de naissance, progres, et decadence de I'heresie de ce siecle, which was published after his death (Paris, 1605) and was translated into Latin, German, and Dutch, appearing in many editions. It refutes Protestantism with temporary effectiveness, and concerning the Mennonites it says (following Stanislaus Hosius): "At the same time the Mennonites arose, under the banner of Menno Simons, a crippled Frisian who had been a Lutheran preacher in Wismar. These miserable people deny that Christ, the Son of God, was born from the body of Mary and took His body from hers; they think instead that He brought it from heaven, and like Luther they say that He is to judge the angels and the princes of this world." It is Ramond who stated that Obbe Philipsz returned to the Catholic Church after his apostasy, a misconception accepted by some Mennonite historians, e.g., Kornelius van Huyzen and Herman Schijn.
