Plaats, van der, family
Van der Plaats is a Dutch Mennonite family, from the 17th century found at Harlingen, Friesland, where in the early 18th century Folkert van der Plaats Jzn was a deacon of the Mennonite congregation and owner of a publishing house, which printed a number of books by Johannes Stinstra. His son Folkert van der Plaats Jr. continued this publishing house until his death in 1806. The business was then run by Melle van der Plaats, a son of Folkert Jr. Some members of this family were noted physicians and lawyers in Friesland.
A descendant of this family was Jan Daniel van der Plaats, b. 1837 at Leeuwarden, d. 1890, who after finishing his studies at the Amsterdam Theological Seminary served as pastor at Hindeloopen-Molkwerum 1851-1856 and Woudsend 1856-1883. He published the sermons delivered in 1858-1859 to commemorate the last service in the old meetinghouse and the first service in the new one at Woudsend: Twee tempel-psalmen (Sneek, 1859).
