Nickel, Jacob D. (1898-1977)
Jacob David Nickel: minister and elder; born on 2 May 1898 in Grossweide, Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, South Russia, son of David D. Nickel (17 August 1853, Rudnerweide, Molotschna, South Russia – 30 August 1940, Chortitza, Chortitza, South Russia) and Margaretha (Dueck) Nickel (4 February 1856, Pordenau, Molotschna, South Russia – 30 November 1915, Grossweide, Molotschna, South Russia). Jacob was the youngest of 13 children (of which three died in infancy). Jacob married Sara Neufeld (14 June 1903, Marienthal, Molotschna, South Russia – 1992), daughter of Abram G. Neufeld (1867-1902) and Anna (Matthies) Neufeld (1859-1916), on 19 January 1922. Jacob and Sara had seven children: David, Margaret, Ernest, John, Peter, Katharina, and Anna. Jacob died on 29 November 1977 in Brooks, Alberta, Canada, and was buried in Rosemary, Alberta.
Jacob’s father was the Aeltester of the Rudnerweide Mennonite Church in the Molotschna, where Jacob was baptized at the age of 18 on 30 May 1916.
Jacob and his wife Sara immigrated to Canada in 1925. They settled in Lymburn, Alberta, where under the direction of Franz Enns from Winkler, Manitoba, the Hoffnungsfeld Mennonite Church was formed. Jacob was elected one of two ministers and was ordained in 1929, serving the congregations that met at Wembley, Lymburn and Beaverlodge. In 1932 he was ordained as Aeltester. Nickel also served from January to March 1934 as the instructor in the Bible school that had been organized by the members at Lymburn.
In 1945 the Nickels, like many others from the area, moved away from Lymburn, and they chose to settle in Rosemary, Alberta. When the Rosemary pastor passed away, Jacob became the Aeltester of the Rosemary Mennonite Church. Nickel served as chairman of the Conference of Mennonites in Alberta from 1948 to 1953.
In 1967 Jacob retired as Aeltester due to ill health.
