Marcus de Smit (d. 1559)
Marcus de Smit (in Offer and van Braght's Martyrs' Mirror called Marcus, the brother of Hans de Smit; in the official records Marcus (Martin) de Smet), an Anabaptist martyr, burned at the stake on the Vrijdagsmarkt of Ghent, Belgium, on 7 August 1559 at 7:00 in the morning, with five other martyrs; some others arrested with them had suffered martyrdom shortly before. A letter by Hans de Vette states that this group of 12 members had been arrested at Ghent on Pentecost of 1559. They are commemorated in two hymns: "Ick moet een liet beginnen" (I must begin a hymn), found in Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562 and Lietboecxken van den Offer des Heeren of 1563 (No. 14), and "Een eeuwighe vruecht die niet en vergaet" (An eternal joy, which does not pass away), found in Veelderhande Liedekens of 1569.
