George Jutzi (1800-1881) was one of only a few Amish who wrote books. He was born in France but then came to North America as a young man and settled in Pennsylvania. Later he moved west to Stark County, Ohio, and then north to Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario where he died. In 1853 Alexander Stutzman of Somerset, Pennsylvania, published a volume with Jutzi's Ermahnung an seine Hinterbliebenen, together with his poetry and other material. The "Letter of Exhortation to his Posterity," originally written in 1842, covers the first 88 pages; following this, there are 237 pages of rhymed verses, again addressed to his children and containing admonitions, warnings, and instructions in the proper Christian conduct of life. The concluding rhymed Abschieds Wunsch covers no less than 55 pages. Generally speaking the spirit of these writings is very characteristically Amish; they reflect a sturdy and concrete Biblical faith without much emotion, but with the determination to carry out this faith in all fields of practical life. The rest of the book is taken up by a brief history of the Mennonites and Amish, partly taken from Gerhard Roosen and written by Sam (Shem) Zook of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania.
