Jan van Lyere (d. 1561)
Jan van Lyere, from Lier in the Belgian province of Brabant, an Anabaptist martyr, was drowned 6 September 1561 at Antwerp in the Steen castle. His wife Lijntgen (Lijnken van Dale) was drowned at Antwerp on 14 November 1562. Jan, a native of Brussels and a carpet weaver by trade, served the congregation as a deacon. A song celebrating Jan and Lijntgen is found in Nieu Liedenboeck of 1562 and inserted in Wackernagel, Lieder. It begins: "Lieve brooders, ick groet u met sanghen" (Dear brethren, I greet you with songs).
