Hinlopen, Dirk Goykes (d. 1752)
Dirk Goykes Hinlopen, a dealer in wood at Workum in the Dutch province of Friesland and preacher of the Waterlander congregation, studied under the celebrated Galenus Abrahamsz de Haan in 1698-1699, delivered his first sermon on 14 January 1700, and remained in this office until his death in 1752. He was generous of heart and peaceable. When the Frisian States, at the request of the Reformed Synod of Harlingen, in 1722 circulated a formulary for the signature of all Mennonite preachers (in part to avoid the spread of Socinian views) Hinlopen not only refused to sign it, but also drew up a document of protest. Hinlopen's descendants were also loyal members of the church, able and willing to contribute many a substantial sum. Simen Dirk Hinlopen (d. 1795) left the church a legacy of 20,000 guilders. Claes Goykes Hinlopen (about 1687-1727), a brother of Dirk, married to Frouwkje Jacobs Braam of Harlingen, was from 1719 treasurer of the "Zuiderklasse" (Mennonite conference of Southwest Friesland); he was a merchant, at first at Workum, and later at Harlingen.
